Scissor Shock te necesita/needs you

Bueno, por fin hoy pude subir la entrevista de Scissor Shock y me parece que quedo bien, pero ahora Scissor Shock tiene un problema, necesita su ayuda de todos los que se interesen en esta gran banda y, a traves de su mano caritativa, incluso obtendran su propia cancion de exclusivamente escrita y grabada por la banda.

El problema es que quieren atracar a Adam Cooley (acerca de un accidente que no ocurrio pero las otras personas insisten en proceder legalmente), sin seguro, sin experiencia legal y sin poder pagar un abogado, Adam decidio pagar la suma que piden los denunciantes la cual es total de $608.53 (dolares por supuesto), el problema es que no tiene dinero, y ahi es donde entra su ayuda, si le mandan $3 dolares (o mas, es una cantidad minima sugerida), Adam se encargara de grabar una cancion personalizada y exclusiva para el donante, la cual se las hara llegar como MP3, incluso pueden decirle como la quieren (si rapida o lenta o ultra rapida o ultra gritada), asi ayudaran a su causa. (Por razones de tiempo y espacio, no pude traducir todo el post original de Adam, pero lo reproducire exactamente en la parte en ingles, abajo de esto)

So finally today i got to post the Scissor Shock interview and it seems everything turned out fine, but now the band has a problem, they need the help of everyone who's interested in this fine band and, thru your helping hand, get your own exclusive song written and recorded by the band.

So here's Adam Cooley's description of everything, i'll let him explain in detail everything, just keep in mind that he took the message straight from MySpace so disregard any mention of that:

"Okay, about 2 months ago, some asshole backed his car into mine as I was in the mall. I came out and dude and wife had called the cops and a cop showed up and said that it was MY fault, that I had hit them, and I contested it, and cop said, "Well, they're the ones who called." And I said, "I WOULDN'T HAVE CALLED EVEN IF THEY HAD HIT ME!" Because, guess what, folks? There was no damage. No bumps, no paint chipping, no scratches. Nothing.

And so, the cop had me back up and he examined this. I talked to him a few days later and asked if he had seen any damage. He maintained that the accident was still my fault but that, no, he hadn't seen damage and that I probably wouldn't hear from those assholes again.

A month later, I heard from those assholes again. Or their insurance company, at least. And they said "Give us a statement." I gave 'em one, and they talked to the cop who said he didn't see any damage. And then their insurance company said, "Okay, I put it right here on the claim report: No damage. According to the cop. You probably won't hear from us again."

A month later, today, I get a letter in the mail. I owe $608.53 for damages from where I supposedly hit dude and wife and it left a scratch and the paint had to be refinished. I went down to their insurance company today and blasted everybody (not with a gun). I was pissed. I called up the dudes who wants the money and said, "Listen, I got a fucking statement from the cop saying he didn't see any damage! THERE WAS NO DAMAGE!" And he said, "The cop isn't a qualified mechanic. It's just his opinion." And I said, "HE WAS MY WITNESS. 5 MINUTES AFTER THE QUOTE-UNQUOTE 'ACCIDENT', HE SAW NOTHING. NO DAMAGE TO HIS CAR, NONE TO MINE." And he said, "You owe $608.53. I need it in a few months. If you wanna take it to court, you can."

So, I explained that the cop even said he'd go to court with me, and he said, "But the cop isn't a mechanic! It won't make a difference!" And I said, "Wow, a police man's word means NOTHING anymore? I find that hard to believe! The dude could have put a scratch on his car after that day!" And he said, "So, you're saying he did that?" And I said, "I'd like not to think so, but common sense says that there was no damage the day of the accident or the day before, so it had to happen after that, right?" So, we argued for forever, and he said either I take em to court or I start paying $75 a month. I have to let him know in a few weeks.

So, I thought about court... court COSTS, hiring an attorney, even fucking talking to an attorney is at least $40. Then, what if dude is right? What if the cop's opinion doesn't matter? What if I lost? Then, I'd have to pay $608.53 AND the court costs AND the lawyer AND the gas money driving to court and back AND buying a suit (okay, the last one doesn't matter, but I'd want to look good in court, man!). So, I am thinking right now.. fuck it. I'll just pay the shit. Maybe I'll change my mind in the next few weeks, but $75 a month ain't much.

Except that I'm currently unemployed. Yeah yeah, I'm going to start looking for a nice and cushy 3rd shift job next week, making a little better than minimum wage and never being able to sleep again. But whether I get hired or not is not the point; I fucking am going to be spending $608.53 of my dollars that shouldn't be going out at all!

So, I've come up with a plan. I have lots of myspace friends, right? Well, what if THEY helped me pay? "WHAT?!!! YOU'RE ASKING US FOR MONEY? WE LOVE YOUR MUSIC, BUT.. MONEY?! YOU WANT MONEY FROM US?!!" Listen, folks. I would never ask you dudes for money. All 4000+ of you mean something to me... either I added you cuz you're cool or you added me cuz you think I'm cool. Or like my shitty music. Whatever. But I feel like we have a sense of trust, a sense of togetherness now. And this is when I need you most.

So, here is an idea I have. For the cost of $3 (yes, THREE DOLLARS!), I will make a song for you. That's right. I will program, scream over, speed up, manipulate, have sex, whatever you want, for only $3. Or you can give me more money, I don't care. But for every $3 I get from a person, I will make a song for you. And upload it to yousendit and you can download it. A specialized song. It won't be the best quality thing ever, as I may have to make a few thousand of these, but you know what? It'll give you guys a sense of accomplishment for giving me money. And it'll give you a specialized song from (hopefully) one of your favorite artists! I can't send the songs on CD-R, because I don't have money to buy CD-R's or pay for stamps (unless you give me more than $3 *wink wink*). But, yes, please please do this. I thank you all in advance.

Scissor Shock tocan un tipo de musica que es imposible de ignorar, es corta, es rapida, esta supre amontonada con basura y ruido y es apocaliptica. Tambien es musica muy divertida para escuchar, como una fiesta en el planeta Bizarro. Pero ellos vienen de Columbus, Indiana; muy improvable de que sea un lugar donde la musica avant-garde se cree, pero aun asi nos ha dado uno de los mejores de este tipo hoy en dia. Y se podria pensar que esta banda se repita una y otra vez con un genero muy estrecho y una mission muy estrecha de solo hacer sonidos irritantes pero cada album (o fase) la banda a pasado es diferente de cada uno (o una), demostrando un sentido de evolucion que dificilmente se encuentra en el rock convencional, sin mencionar en la parte extrema de este. Una banda muy sarcastica con titulos de canciones como “Writing The President Kill Theme Song” (“Escribiendo La Cancion Tema De Matar Al Presidente”), “Santa Got Me A White Belt For Chrismas” (“Santa Me Trajo Un Cinturon Blanco Esta Navidad”), “Urethra Franklin” y “Forever Celebrating The Death Of Ectoplasm” (“Celebrando La Muerte Del Ectoplasma Para Siempre”), chance quieres ahogarlos en el lago mas frio que puedas encontrar o elogiarlos como la banda mas punk en el universo, los herederos en estetica de Butthole Surfers, Boredoms, Atari Teenage Riot, Brianiac y Wolf Eyes. Adam Cooley: Hola, mi nombre es Adam Cooley, conocido de Scissor Shock. Somos techno ruido psicodelico math glitch jazz grind speedcore rock de Columbus, Indiana.
Sean Edwards: Soy Sean, toco guitarra.

Como empezo la banda?
Adam: En navidad de 2002, encontre una guitarra y un amplo muy baratos ($100 dolares por los dos). La semana siguiente, decidi tartar de hacer algunas canciones con su sonido naturalmente delgado y bizarro. No trate de hacer canciones raras o algo asi, solo algunas canciones que pense eran interesantes. Bueno, naturalmente, tengo periodos muy cortos de atencion, las canciones se convirtieron en locuras. Hemos explorado el grindcore de videojuego, ruido psicodelico y montones de otras cosas a traves de los ultimos 2 años y medio, pero tres cosas se mantuvieron: Un enfasis en la bateria, muchos gritos y una complejidad demente. Y asi es. Las cosas evolucionaron, y ahora Sean esta en la banda, tocando guitarra y eso.



Creen que Scissor Shock es un colectivo o si alguna vez lo sera?
Adam: Recientemente tocamos un show en vivo, y el show incluyo un guitarrista adicional (Sean Edwards) y en ESE show en particular, teniamos a nuestro amigo Norton gruñiendo en una cancion. Scissor Shock a evolucionado a traves del tiempo, y sigo impresionado que pudimos tocar en vivo. Para que todo se pudiera juntar fue muy inpensable. Aun sigo programando toda la musica y esas cosas, pero es bueno que tenga la ayuda de Sean y otra gente. Quiero que la experiencia en vivo sea interactiva; como, que la gente misma ayude a hacer las tocadas. Si alguien quiere subirse al “escenario” para ayudarnos a traves de la tocada, eso estaria bien. Si puedes aportar algo, entonces hazlo. Aunque nuestra musica esta en constante evolucion, el show en vivo, creo, sera bueno para los fans de nuestra banda, sean de antes o nuevos. Mientras mas envejecientes Baby Boomers se junten a traves de sus bifocals en la plataforma Lance Hendrix-iana de su propia mortalidad, una pregunta ocurre con frecuencia atontante: A donde vamos despues de la llamada en el Bistro Earth?

Bistro Earth, ¡por supuesto! ¿Que es lo que les hace identificar tanto con musica corta, disonante y abrasiva?
Adam: Nada, estoy mas interesado cuando la gente se siente comoda con una idea y empiezan a adoptar una forma de pensar para su propia banda como si fuera LA regla para la musica en general. Un ejemplo es Lightning Bolt. 3 cuerdas de bajo y una de banyo y un bataco que destroza su bateria. Vocales de vez en cuando, lo que sea... pero ellos escriben estas canciones basadas en estas “limitaciones” y han aceptado lo que son, y en verdad disfruto cosas asi. Ya sea que esten escribiendo canciones de 30 minutos o de un minuto, se me hacen muy aplicables. ASI es como la musica se debe oir para ellos. Pienso que si una banda puede sacar sus sonidos con musica larga, libre de forma y fatalista, eso es bueno. Scissor Shock usualmente usa la musica corta, disonante y abrasiva que describiste porque mis periodos de atencion son muy cortos. Quiero decir, se que la gente dice que la vida comienza a los cuarenta. Si, si eres pinche Highlander. Pero, sabes, el resto de nosotros trata de entender algo de este indecifrable parloteo de las suposiciones de todos los demas a esperar a lo que nos espera detras de la puerta numero 3 en el frasco de muerte de Monty.
SEAN: Hmmm... basicamente, me gusta la musica corta, disonante y abrasiva porque no sigue y sigue y te aburre. Como que va a lo que va y luego se va a algo que se oye completamente diferente. Si.

Yo estoy impresionado que hayan mencionado a Highlander, ese guey roqueaba...roquea...lo que sea. ¿Cual piensan que es el mensaje que dan en su musica?
Sean: Uh...Tenemos alguno, Adam?
Adam: ...
Sean: "Get crunk't, kill a ho."
Adam: Haha. Me gustaria que la gente llegue a sus propias conclusiones. Tratamos de abrir mentes, pero no quiero saturar a la gente con mi musica. Es como, que es esta musica para TI? Un riff de guitarra puede ser la cosa mas bella o mas fea para los oidos de cualquiera. Quien sabe? No se lo que la gente piensa de nuestra musica, solo tu lo sabes. Carajo, estoy muy cliché hoy.
Sean: No nos gustan las mujeres, las drogas estan bien, mata a una monja, y luego viola su cadaver putrefacto, y luego roba su grasa y sus musculos y vendeselos a los niños en los parques.
Adam: ...las opinions expresadas por Sean Edwards no son exactamente las opinions de Scissor Shock.

Que es lo que les gustaria lograr con la banda?
Sean: Que la gente vea algo nuevo cada vez y que la gente piense un poco diferente.
Adam: Si. Bueno, Ya he ganado $60 dolares y tengo 4000 amigos en myspace. Es un buen comienzo. Tambien, esta es la Segunda entrevista que he hecho, y acabamos de tocar un show en vivo. A parte, hemos sacado cosas en disqueras muy chingonas (xdiedenroutey, brokecore, excitebiketapes, !!!PLUG PLUG PLUG!!!). Creo que logrado algo... y estoy agradecido por eso. Creo que ahora mi meta principal en la banda es abrir un poco la mente de las personas y tartar de hacer que pasen cosas interesantes. Creo que el sue;o de todas las bandas es hacer de la musica emocionante otra vez, y yo voy y usare ese cliché. ¿Sabes cuantos discos verdaderamente originales y chingones he oido en el 2005 que hayan salido en el 2005? Ni Uno. Eso me molesta. Yo solo quiero tocar en vivo y convertirme en algo enorme. Y cuqlquiera que haya querido vernos, eventualmente nos vere y nos oira. Basicamente, en algun lugar hay alguien sentado que necesita una banda como Scissor Shock y aun no la tienen. Quiero darles esto a ellos.



¿Que es musica para ustedes?
Adam: El arte de organizar sonidos.

(pausa) Bueno, ok. ¿Alguna vez han tocado mientras estan ebrios o algo asi?
Sean: Haha, bueno...casi nunca...hmm...no.
Adam: Nunca he tomado drogas, bebido, fumado ni nada. Es raro. Nuestra musica tiene algo de “droga” asociado con ella...la gente la oye y dice "Esto esta fumado. DEBEN de haber estado drogados." Chistoso.

¿Quien piensan que son sus contemporaneos?
Adam: No estoy seguro aun...

Ustedes apenas empezaron a tocar en vivo, ¿como ha sido su experiencia?
Sean: Muy divertido...quiero decir, yo me diverti mucho.
Adam: Bueno, hemos tocado un show hasta ahora. Fue MUCHO mejor de lo que pense seria. Nada se jodio, fue muy facil, fue divertido, y la gente se quedo viendo sin saber que pensar. INCREIBLE!

Me da gusto saberlo, se nota por las fotos. Han covereado canciones de Big Black ("Passing Complexion") y Six Finger Satellite ("30 Lashes"); ¿que hace a un buen cover, en su opinion?
Adam: ¿Sabes?, es gracioso, me gustan muy pocos covers. Me gustan algunos de Kindergarten Hazing Ritual y me gusta "Take On Me" de Cap'N Jazz...no se...Creo que un buen cover es basicamente cuando tomas la cancion que estas coveriendo y la haces tuya.
Sean: Si, debe oirse similar a la cancion (original)...como, sabes de quien es, pero debe reflejar tu propio estilo de musica y tener algo diferente tambien.
Adam: Si.
Sean: Si.

Recientemente, escribieron un ensayo detallando la grabacion de su disco Super Yum Surgeon Boy, que tan importante es el proceso, ya sea de escribir canciones o de grabacion, para ustedes?
Adam: Bueno, pienso que es importante que la gente comparta sus tecnicas y eso, especialmente los artistas que hacen sus propias grabaciones con el presupuesto de unos cuantos centavos, como yo. Me preguntan mil veces al dia "¿COMO HACES TU MUSICA? QUE USAS?" Y creo que el punto que quiero reiterar es que no importa lo que use, la mayor parte de la gente probablemente no conseguira el mismo resultado con lo que ellos usen. Tu solo tienes que…usar lo que uses...uh, si. Me estoy saliendo del tema. Me gusta detallar las pendejadas que hago, porque leerlo despues me hace llorar, solo que tristemente representa el hecho de que paso mas tiempo leyendo y escribiendo sobre musica en vez de escuchar o hacerla. Pero, bueno.

Oye, Yo tengo una fanzine!! Yo lo se todo acerca de escribir y leer demasiado de musica y no hacerla, aunque me paso mucho tiempo oyendo tambien. Piensan si la musica solo vivira en forma digital exclusivamente en el futuro cercano?
Adam: Si, absolutamente. Es gracioso, compraria cds mas seguido, pero son muy pinches caros. El otro dia, vi Entertainment! de Gang Of Four en una libreria y costaba $19.99 (dolares). ¿Cuando salio ese disco? ¿1977 o algo asi? Lo que quiero decir es, en serio, ¿un disco de 40 minutos que salio hace casi 30 años por $20?. Eso es ridiculo, yo no soy rico. (Edicion: Lo que Adam no tomo en cuenta es que esa la reedicion con 8 canciones extra y muchas cosas y que el disco estuvo fuera de edicion por muchos años pero su punto es claro, yo no lo compre por el precio precisamente) Hacer un CD nada mas cuesta 43 centavos (de dolar), y esa es la parte importante, en verdad. Me gusta el arte y eso, pero acabas viendo el arte, las letras y lo demas de la informacion en sus paginas de todas formas. Entonces si, pienso que la musica eventualmente sera totalmente en MP3s y CD-Rs. Dale 10 años mas. ¿Has notado que la frase "In God We Trust" ("En Dios Nosotros Confiamos") solo aparece en la denominacion mas baja de la moneda (de Estados Unidos)? Llegas al billete de $1000, y solo dice: "Dios, Creo Que De Aqui En Adelante Puedo Solo."



Creen que Johnny Merzbow es un personaje en su musica o han pensado si puede convertirse en algo recurrente en sus discos?
Adam: Johnny Merzbow es un scanner de policia. Es todo lo que sabemos. Puede que sea solo un zombie del Departamento de Trafico enputado que te hace irte hasta el final de la fila de idiotas detras del tipo que tomo una sola clase de Tai Chi y fue a un bar de motociclistas a aprobarla. Esta paraado en frente de ti en la posicion de la gruya con un taco de billar saliendo del culo, con la parte gruesa por adentro.

¿Se inspiran en otras cosas a parte de la musica, como peliculas o libros o alguna otra cosa?
Sean: Encuentro mi motivacion de mi unico heroe verdadero, el Papa. A veces, rezo y pido de su consejo y escribo lo que siento, hombre...lo que siento.
Adam: Toda la musica que hago viene de mi vida boba.

¿Que es lo que han estado escuchando ultimamente?

Scissor Shock play a kind of music that is impossible to ignore, it’s short, it’s fast, it’s ultra cluttered with junk and noises and it’s apocalyptic. It’s also very fun to listen to, like a party from planet Bizarro. But they hail from Columbus, Indiana, hardly a hot spot for avant-garde music yet it gave us one of the best of this kind right now. And you think this band might repeat itself over and over with such a narrow genre and mission just to make annoying sounds, but each album (or phase) the band has endured is different from each, demonstrating an evolution hardly found today in conventional rock, let alone the extreme kind. A very sarcastic band with song titles like “Writing The President Kill Theme Song”, “Santa Got Me A White Belt For Chrismas”, “Urethra Franklin” and “Forever Celebrating The Death Of Ectoplasm”, you might want to drown them on the coldest lake you can find or praise them as the next punkest band ever, the aesthetical heirs to the Butthole Surfers, Boredoms, Atari Teenage Riot, Brianiac and Wolf Eyes. I talked to band founder/leader/sometimes only member Adam Cooley and newcomer guitarist Sean Edwards about playing live, Highlander and the Pope.


Marcos Hassan (The Obsolete): Introduce yourself
Adam Cooley: Hello, my name is Adam Cooley, of Scissor Shock fame. We are techno noise psychadelic math glitch jazz grind speedcore rock from Columbus, Indiana.
Sean Edwards: I'm Sean, I play guitar.

How did the band started?
Adam: For Christmas 2002, I got a really cheap guitar and amp ($100 for both). The following week, I decided to try to make some songs with it's naturally tinny and bizarre sound. I didn't try to make weird songs or anything -- just songs I found to be interested. Well, naturally, I have a short attention span, the songs became just ridiculously insane and it went from there. We've explored video game grindcore, psychadelic noise, and tons of other things throughout the past 2 1/2 years, but three things remain the same: An emphasis on drums, tons of screaming, and insanely complex. And so it goes. Things evolved, and now Sean is in the band, playing guitar and shit.



Do you think Scissor Shock is a collective or if it ever will become one?

Adam: We recently played a live show, and the live show included an additional guitarist (Sean Edwards) and on THAT particular show, we had our buddy Norton make growls on a song. Scissor Shock has evolved over time, and I'm still kind of in shock that we were able to play live. To bring it all together is just mindboggling. I still do all the programming and stuff, but it's nice to have input from Sean and other people. I want the live experience to be somewhat interactive; as in, the crowds themselves help make shows. If anyone wants to join us on "stage" to help us through our set, that'd be fine. If you can bring anything to the table, then go ahead. Though our music is constantly evolving, the live show, I think, is pleasing to any fans of our band, new and old. As more and more aging Baby Boomers peer through their bifocals at the haggard Lance Hendrixian face of their own mortality, one question seems to occur with numbing frequency: where do we go after last call at Bistro Earth?

Bistro Earth, sure! What is it about short, dissonant, abrasive music that appeals to you so much?
Adam: Nothing. I'm more interested when people become comfortable with an idea and they start adopting a mindsight for their particular band as if it was THE rule for music itself. An example is Lightning Bolt. 3 bass strings and a banjo string on a bass and a drummer that tears up the drum set. Occasional vocals, whatever...but they write these songs based on these "limitations" and they've accepted what they are, and I really enjoy things like that. Whether they're writing 30 minute songs or 1 minute songs, I find that all very appealing. It's like THAT is what music should sound like to them. I think if a band can only pull off their sounds with long, drawn-out, doomy music, that's cool. Scissor Shock just usually uses the short, dissonant, abrasive music that you described because my attention span is too short. I mean, I know people say life begins at forty. Yeah, if you're the fucking Highlander. But, you know, the rest of us are trying to make sense out of the indecipherable babble of everyone else's best guess as to what awaits us behind door number 3 in Monty's death jar.
Sean: Hmmm...basically, I like short, dissonant, abrassive music because it doesn't drag out and get boring. It kinda gets to the point and then moves on to something completley different-sounding. Yes.

I’m still stoked you named-dropped Highlander, that dude rocked...rocks...whatever. What do you think is the message in your music?
Sean: Uh...do we have one Adam?
Adam: ...
Sean: "Get crunk't, kill a ho."
Adam: Haha. I'd just rather people draw their own conclusions. We're trying to open minds, but I don't want to cram our music down people's throats. It's like, what does the music mean to YOU? A guitar riff can be the most beautiful or the ugliest thing to someone's ears. Who knows? I don't know what people think of our music, only you know that. Damn, I'm so cliché today.
Sean: We don't like women, drugs are okay, kill a nun, and then rape her rotting corpse, and then steal her fat and muscle(s) and sell it to little children at playgrounds.
Adam: ...the views expressed by Sean Edwards are not exactly the views of Scissor Shock.

What do you want to achieve with Scissor Shock?
Sean: To let people see something new each time and to get people to think a little differently.
Adam: Yes. I mean, I've already made about $60 and have 4000 myspace friends. That's a pretty good start. Also, this is the second interview I've done, and we just played a live show. Plus, we've released shit on some great labels (Xdiedenroutey, Brokecore, Excitebiketapes, !!!PLUG PLUG PLUG!!!). I think I've achieved quite a bit... and I'm thankful for that. I guess my main goal in the band now is to try to open people's minds a bit and to try to make interesting things happen. I guess every band's dream is to make music exciting again, and I'll go ahead and use that cliché. You know how many truly original, awesome albums I've heard in 2005 that came out in 2005? None. That bothers me. I just want to play live shows and turn that into a huge thing. And everyone that ever wanted to see us can eventually see us and hear us. Basically, there's a kid sitting there somewhere who NEEDS a band like Scissor Shock and they don't have it yet. So, I want to give that to them.



So what is music to you?
Adam: The art of arranging sounds.

(pause)...Well, ok. Do you ever work on music while drunk or something?
Sean: Haha, well...not usually...hmm...no.
Adam: I've never done drugs, drank, smoked or anything. It's odd, though. Our music ALWAYS has some kind of "drug" thing attached to it... people hear it and go, "Man. This is crazy. They MUST be on drugs." Funny.

Who do you think are your contemporaries?
Adam: Not sure yet...

You've just started to play live, how has it been?
Sean: Pretty fun...I mean, I had fun.
Adam: Well, we've played one show so far. It was WAY better than I thought it would be. Nothing fucked up, it went smooth, it was fun, and people stared and didn't know what to think. AWESOME!

Glad to hear, it shows by the pictures. You've covered songs by Big Black ("Passing Complexion") and Six Finger Satellite ("30 Lashes"); in your opinion, what makes a good cover?
Adam: You know, it's funny, I like very few covers. I like some Kindergarten Hazing Ritual covers and I like Cap'N Jazz's "Take On Me"...I dunno...I guess a good cover is just basically when you take the song you covered and make it your own.
Sean: Yeah, it should sound similar to the song...like, you know who it is by, yet it should reflect your style of music in it and have your own sort of twist too.
Adam: Yeah.
Sean: Yeah.

You recently wrote an essay detailing the recording of Super Yum Surgeon Boy, how important is the process to you, whether it is the songwriting process or the recording process?
Adam: Well, I think it's important that people share their techniques and such, especially artists who make their records on a budget of a few pennies, like myself. I get asked about a million times a day "HOW DO YOU MAKE YOUR MUSIC? WHAT DO YOU USE?" And I guess the point I want to stress is that no matter what I use, most people probably won't get the same effect with what they use. You just have to...use what you use...uh, yeah. I'm totally getting off track. I like to detail how I do shit, because it makes me all teary-eyed to read it later, though sadly it kind of also represents the fact that I spend more time reading and writing about music than listening to or making it. Oh well.

Do you think music will only live in digital form in the near future?
Adam: Yep, absolutely. It's funny, I'd buy CD's more often, but they're just so goddamn expensive. I saw Gang of Four’s Entertainment! in a book store the other day for $19.99. When did that CD come out? 1977 or something? I mean, seriously, a near-30-year-old 40-minute CD for $20?!. That's ridiculous! I'm not rich. (Edition: What Adam didn’t consider was that it was the reissue with 8 extra songs and other stuff and that it had been out of print for some years, but his point is clear, I didn’t buy the album either because of the price). It costs 43 cents to make the CD itself, and that's really the important part. I like the art and shit, but you end up seeing all the art, lyrics, and all the other info on websites anyway. So, yeah, I think music will eventually be all MP3s and CD-Rs eventually. Give it 10 more years. Did you ever notice the phrase "In God We Trust" only appears on the lesser denominations of our currency? You get up around the $1000 bill, and it just says "God, I Think I Can Take It From Here."



Do you think Johnny Merzbow is a character in your music or do you think he can become someone recurrent in your releases?
Adam: Johnny Merzbow is a scanner cop. That's all we know. He could be just another pissed off DMV zombie who makes you go to the end of the stooge line behind the guy who had one Tai Chi lesson and went into a biker bar to test it out. He's standing in front of you there in the crane position with a pool cue sticking out of his ass, blunt side in.

Do you find inspiration in stuff other than music, like movies or books or anything else?
Sean: I get motivation from my one and only true hero, the Pope. Sometimes, I pray and ask for insight, and I write what I feel, man... what I feel.
Adam: All the music I make comes from my dumb life.

If De-loused In The Comatorium was the Volta’s In The Court Of The Crimson King, then this one is their In The Wake Of Poseidon (hell, it even sounds like later day Emerson, Lake and Palmer!), sort of like the former but not as good, kinda transitional, very wanking on the instruments but, over all, derivative and sorta unoriginal, like if they kept thinking “we’re like King Crimson and Pink Floyd on fast forward, that’s innovative enough, right? Let’s just play longer songs and have 20 solos in each one of them”. Hope this is just a bump in the road and they get to Larks’ Tongues In Aspic, Red and Discipline very soon.

Who misses indie pop? The days before that meant copying as much as you can from the post punk scene circa-1980 (a bassline from Gang Of Four, a chorus from the Knack, Joy Division’s drumbeat, David Byrne’s haircut; yeah, about the haircut, i’m talking to you Franz Ferdinand, in fact, i'm talking to you about everything i mentioned, geeks!), when it was all about good twisted songs with unlike elements in them. Spoon remember, and they present this most excellent collection of skewed pop ditties with untrained vocals, quirky sounds and the occasional dissonant moment. Superb songs, that’s all there is to say.

Hearing the first single “BYOB”, i thought that System Of A Down finally did something since their debut album that made them deserve all the hype they have been getting since 2001’s mediocrity Toxicity. But all the brilliance heard in the single (putting together galloping riffs, Iron Maiden-esque guitar melodies, a catchy chorus, political conscious lyrics, screamy hardcore punk and blastbeats) is absent from the rest of the album where they do, you guessed it, the same shit they have done for the last 2 records; in fact, i think they have never moved out of their first record, except the quality has gone down considerably; too fucking bad really. Dinosaur Jr/Broken Social Scene/Radio 4/Magik Markers. July 14 de Julio, Central Park Summerstage (NY)

For those who haven't followed the saga or if you're back paging or if you googled a concert review and find yourself here without previous knowledge of this blog or it's author, well i'm on vacations from the big, tiring and stressing task of living in Mexico City and chose a very exotic and different enviroment to what i'm used to, so that's why i'm in New York (that's sarcasm for you!) and that's why i'm telling the story of a concert i went to which happened way farther than where i usually attend concerts.

I arrived at Central Park at something like 5:30, the show was scheduled to start at 6:00 but doors were supposed to open at 4:30, something which kinda tipped me to hurry and get early since there was a lot of expectations, i thought. 5:30 was the earliest i could arrive, i was kinda slowing the pace that day i think; so i started roaming the lands that were fenced up to house a stage, some trailers and other commodities to make it look like a real concert ground, people who were already there were tanning on the sun, stretching on the ground, lying down, relaxing, speaking to each other, there were even some guys playing hacky sack (give me a fucking break is right). i went to the merch area, were they offered a great variety of products and memorabilia, a Broken Social Scene cd, the Dinosaur reissues, J Mascis' and Lou Barlow's solo shit, shirts, caps and copies of the reissued "Freak Scene" 7"; to my sadness, there was no Magik Markers merch, so my hopes of scoring a limited edition cd-r or a copy of my shopping list-topper I Trust My Guitar, Etc. LP soon faded, so i settled for a Dinosaur t-shirt and the "Freak Scene" 7", thinking i may come back for a cd. While walking around the land i noticed in this backstage area, which was a barricaded part of the park by the side of the stage were some trailers were parked, that J Mascis himself was there talking to people, which seemed cool, to watch one of my favorite guitar heroes be a person and doing human stuff so near to me, like talking; what i just wrote sounds too pretentious and like i think this guy is a god or something but that's not what i meant, the thing is that i'm finally seeing someone i have seen in videos and in pictures on magazines, the internet, etc. not possing but just chilling out, he didn't seem nervous at all. Then out of nowhere (to me at least) comes a giant blonde skinny guy and approaches J, it was Thurston Fucking Moore and he looked and acted exactly as i expected, laughing, all cool, in good spirits which was intimidating, he was just a few feet from me and i could have gone to the barricades and yell "Thurston" so maybe i could thank him for being such a big inspiration and a motherfucking killer artist but i frozed, because he impressed me so much as the way he is, which is exactly as you'd expect it to be. Then, when i thought it wouldn't get any better, Kim Gordon walks over there too, i couldn't believe i was seeing 2/5s of Sonic Youth so near to me; if i sound starstrucked that's because i am. I'm not trying to be a super geeky groupie fan when i say it but, to me, they seemed like rock royalty visiting a mighty event in music.

While trying to find a bit shadow from the trees around the area, i saw a tall red haired girl walk over onstage with guitar in hand, a curly haired guy sat behind the drums and another girl in this crazy, thrift store dress (or at least it looked that way), the Magik Markers were setting up!!! i recognized Leah in a second and most people weren't aware yet of what was going on so i could just walk up to the stage, in front of the barricade, for the first time a long time i was at the very front of the stage (at left, to be more precise). An anouncer started to inform about the Central Park concert series and about this particular show, making it known that Dinosaur haven't played with this very line up since 1989; then asking for an applause for the openers, the Magik Markers.

Elisa Ambrogio told the crowd that this was a hardcore show and tried to taunt the crowd to "fight" her, but since it was still early during the day, people weren't very up to it. What really struck me about the Markers was the state of their instruments, most of which seemed to be crumbling, Leah's guitar had a shattered pickguard and Elisa's left handed guitar wasn't that far off, but Pete Nolan's drumset was the stuff of legends, something you have to see and hear to be believed, he played with a cracked cymbal, the stand of the other cymbal was tour-fixed by taping a broken drumstick to the end of it so the cymbal would stay; plus, i don't know if this was just a cool idea or nessecity being the mother of invention, but i also noticed that the bottom cymbal on the hi hats was a bigger cymbal, a crash or a ride. The other thing that struck me about the Magik Markers was how much of a racket they did with such small means, by which i'm referring to Elisa's small (for stage use) Fender combo amp; since the go, they sent wave after wave of aggressive distorting noises, sometimes recalling the no wavey sound of Teenage Jesus and The Jerks or DNA and at times kicking into a hardcore kind of adrenaline high, topped off with buried vocals or/and accompanied with frenetic screaming; by all means this is way good and the music coming from the stage was excellent but i felt something was missing, they weren't spewing out the kind of energy i have seen from the videos i have been downloading from the Ecstatic Peace site, probably because they're used to play places were there's no stage, they are at floor level and having true interaction with the crowd; not that they didn't try to reach out, Elisa pretty much was tip toeing on the edge of the stage the whole time, sometimes falling and sometimes leaning to the front, and when a security guard was trying to keep her from falling to broken rib-ville she reached her hand for him to take, god knows what for, but the guard wouldn't play along. The band ended their set at the same place they started it and it was disappointing that the finale was so anti climatic, even if the set was far from bad. As the band gathered their gear, i overheard the security guard saying to somebody in the crowd "that was the worst fucking music i have ever heard in my life" and everytime someone says something like that to band like the Markers, an angel gets his/her wings.

Next up were Radio 4, which i had heard basically two things about them: 1) they are yet another band trying to imitate the post punk sounds of Gang Of Four, Joy Division and early PIL (like their name suggest) but come off sounding more like A Flock Of Seagulls and Billy Idol and 2) they suck. My suspicions grew larger when i saw they were setting up keyboards AND percussion; most bands that use percussion blow (with the clear exception of De-Loused era Mars Volta, but then again look at what they have become), it's pretty hard to have that self impossed handicap and come around it. The band did sound like an 80's arty but dancy new wave band, and played a predictable set, which kinda sucked (knowing that most of the other Dinosaur dates had Bardo Pond opening); but, to their credit, they played with energy, unlike other rock revivalists who are here to save rock n' roll who just like to stand there looking "cool" in designer-approved clothes. They rocked, but it was all been there, done that.

I didn't know much of Broken Social Scene except that they were a sort of Canadian collective, and i had an idea of what they could sound like, yet i didn't expect to see 10+ people, most of which were going to play guitar, pretty much all who were going to sing together at some point and even have a horn section; but before that, one of the guys in the band said that they were two guys short, which seemed a bit Spinal Tap to me, i thought they were joking, especially when he told the audience why they were missing, they were arrested for trying to score weed on a public park; everyone in the crowd laughed or clapped at the idiotic thought, and even the guy in the crowd concluded that, indeed, it was idiotic [Edit:: turns out the NYPD weren't too kind to the guys, check out the Pitchfork articule about them getting beat up by the the cops; to borrow a Buddyhead phrase: Shoot Pigs In The Face!]; they played a crowd pleasing (i do mean crowd pleasing, since most everyone was bewildered by them) set of shimmering, optimistic indie pop that was good but not extraordinare, in my opinion, they were fun to watch and to listen to but it didn't make me want to run to the merch table and buy their cd. They were ok, and that was that.

Since i arrived, and during breaks between bands, the PA was playing a variety of music which ranged from ancient folk recordings (you could tell they were ancient) to a drum n' bass version of "Oh Bondage! Up Yours!" by British '77 punks X-Ray Spex, or was it an "Oh Bondage! Up Yours!"-sampling drum n' bass song? Anyway, to me, the highlight of these in between songs was Black Flag's anthem "Wasted"; the roadies got everything ready for the band to come up onstage and destroy; J had the coolest amps ever, they were both full Marshall stacks, one of them all purple, the other half orange, half black, both old as fuck and showing it, i have decided since this show that the greatest looking gear is fucked, worn as hell stuff, Lou had two stacks as well, one topped with a power amp and the other with a Marshall guitar head (i think), it did look like one of the loudest things to be experienced, J has a rack-like box were he can plug all his analog pedals and switched them on and off with a MIDI remote footswitch, he had his usual arsenal of Jazzmasters and a Fender Strat; the drumset was small.

After a few minutes of anxious waiting, J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph took the stage, and started playing almost on the go, rocking hard, right after J thanked everyone for coming; i was standing right in front of J, who was wearing a Discharge shirt, how's that for punk?, and at first, the band wasn't as loud as i thought, but then, whenever he stepped on his pedal board it made the volume jump from concert loud to almost-pain in your ears kinda loud; sure, the fact that it was an open venue concert made it seem less loud but it was certainly very loud anyway. And right from the beginning things started to escalate, the second song they played was the Lou-showcase "In A Jar", who was rocking a Rickenbaker bass; i was startled to listen to them play and think of my Dinosaur bootlegs from '88 and '87 and realizing theat it sounded the same, as if they had never broken up and the reunion happened in 1991 instead of 2005. Song after song, it was great, loud awesome rock, most featuring those face-melting solos (J is definitely one of my favorite guitarists, and i don't like guitarists much); after Lou fooled around with a bassline after hearing a request from the crowd the band launched into the one song i classify as "the one i want to hear but probably they won't play" (it happens at every concert), which in this case was "Little Furry Things" which was fucking ecstatic; watching J play all the little fills and expansions of the chords made me realize that there's so much more to his great guitar playing than just his screaming solos, it was something you can only learn at a concert; the band was playing so hard that Murph lost his glass sometime during the show and they ended up in the crowd, the security people made the kid who had them give them back and when Lou noticed they were putting a pair of glasses onstage, he went "glasses?" not knowing what was going on, then realizing they were there drummer's; the band was in amazing spirits, Lou and Murph were constantly smiling and i'm pretty sure i saw J break at least one smile. At some point towards the end of the set, some guy managed to climb the barricade, reach for the stage, get up, run a little and jump into the crowd; problem was, he chose to jump exactly where i was standing; as i was just thinking that i had a t shirt and a fragile vinyl 7" disc in my hands, i instinctively ducked and stood back and by some kind of miracle i avoided getting whacked in the head by a boot, even if i still felt a leg whistle past me, and it sure was strange to have Kim Gordon looking to my direction while she smiled for the stagediver.

After a brief absence following their last song, the band came onstage again and started to rip thru one of their best known masterpieces: "Freak Scene", they played it aggressively, with J switching between a flange and a tremolo during the first instrumental break on the song and when the solo was supposed to start, J just switched on the flanger again and threw his guitar, letting it ring without us noticing that he actually broke a string, he picked it up to mess noisily with it before his roadie gave him another guitar just in time; as the solo time ended, J started to sing the bridge of the song but soon his voice was drowned by that of everyone else's singing: "sometimes i don't thrill you/sometimes i think i'll kill you/so don't let me fuck up will you/'cause when i need a friend it's still you", which felt amazing since this wasn't a sing along kind of show, J even smiled right there and then, i felt those lyrics as if they were happening at that same moment, and so did happen to everyone singing along, it was definitely a special moment. After that song, the crowd went crazy yet again, when they followed "Freak Scene" with their cover of the Cure's "Just Like Heaven", which everyone, being the good indie kids they are, knew by heart; i remembered for a brief moment one of the very first moments of the whole show, when Elisa Ambrogio said this was a "hardcore show", for it became one for just one chorus, when everyone screamed "you!!!" and pointed their fingers to the band during the chorus of that song, not to mention that a mosh pit was way undergoing for a while. They left the stage and returned once more to play "The Lung", then "Chunks" and then it was complete, over and amazing.

At the end of the show, i was driven to buy one their cds but the line was e-fucking-normous, proving that those albums will arrive to people who might have all but ignore one of the greatest bands ever.

Hey There/Hola a Todos

Hey everybody, for the sake of keeping up with the haps, i'm in New York, enjoying the rain; tomorrow i'll be heading to Central Park to watch the Dinosaur Jr reunion for myself, opening the show are Broken Social Scene, Magik Fucking Markers!!! and Radio 4; i have big hopes for the J, Lou and Murph show, and also for the Markers who have been like, one of my favorite new bands from this year, i'll give you my notes Friday, i think.

This post also marks the beginning of a new era, since it's the first one that will be billingual; inspired in big part by the D3SNT3GRAdô blog, i'll go spanglish since this very post, i tried coming up with a mirror but that's too complicated, maybe i'll even change the url for the one on the mirror, i'll decide it later on.

Hola todo el mundo, para tenerlos informados, estoy en Nueva York de vacaciones, disfrutando de la lluvia. Mana;a voy a ir a Central Park para presenciar uno de los conciertos de reunion de Dinosaur Jr, abriendoles estaran Broken Social Scene, Magik Fucking Markers!!!!! y Radio 4; tengo grandes expectativas del show de J, Lou y Murph, asi como de los markers, quienes han sido una de mis bandas favoritas de este a;o. Yeah, yeah, i know, incredibly lack of activity here, now let me explain: This monday, since i'm on vacations, i am going to New York for a couple of weeks to chill, hunt down some rare Bulb Records 7" noise vinyl and probably see some kick ass concerts. This, however, means that the blog is going to suffer a little bit from this; post will be a bit more irregular i think (more irregular!!!) and not as active, plus, i don't think i will be posting much of my favorite shit, but i'm trying to do some homework so i can have some more normal, regular updates while i'm not home, i have a couple of interviews in the can, i have some reviews to be posted soon also, and i'll try to work on getting some tunes for download. The server for the radio show is still fucked, i haven't got a solution yet (except yousenditing it!) but i'll try to record another show or two.

i have so much to write about, the Live Hate, i mean, G8 concert; some of today's stupidities involving music, season finales of my favorite TV shows (The O.C.-good; Gilmore Girls-moronic), and just good entertaining reading for you, i hope.

So, hope you're all doing fine and have good vacations

Tragedy

So yeah, today was a fucked tragic day for the world, to London, more specifically, you probably heard of the terrorist attacks...my thoughts and prayers go out to everyone there and hope for things to get better in this fucked up era. No justification can be giving to the killing of innocent people.

And i thought Bono already fixed the world because he got to sing "Sargeant Pepper" with Paul McCartney...
